My It's All About Those Abs Post

Okay first up yes, I did have Meghan Trainor's All About That Bass in my head whilst I was editing the above picture I admit it. But that song just will not disappear and I will confess, I like it! Nothing like a little honest to start the post.

Before I get into this post I just want to remind/ clarify yet again that I am not a fitness professional, I don't have a health or fitness qualification and simply I am just sharing my fitness journey and hoping that I can help and maybe inspire those on their own quests to become fitter and healthier versions of themselves.

So disclaimer out of the way I'm guessing by now you may have realised that today's post is about achieving those lean, mean, abdominal muscles. Something that I have always struggled with. But recently the penny seems to have dropped in my head, abs are not made in the gym (although of course a fair bit of cardio and calisthenic exercise will help) but in the kitchen. There is little point working hard in the gym, doing that exercise DVD or belting out 100's of sit ups and then going home eating pizza and drinking loads of soda, it is counter productive and will get you nowhere fast.

Here are a few things that I have found have helped me find my abs and that may help you too...

1) Go Teetotal - Not only does alcohol encourage your body to store fat as opposed to burning it, it tends to cause bloating and encourage you to eat more than you need to do as well the next day to soak it up, bad booze! I only really ever drink on a weekend if at all and even then I might only have the odd Gin & Slimline which I definitely notice the effects of!

2) Get Soft - Cut out the fizzy pop, so don't replace your glass of wine with one of Diet Coke! The fizz in pop is created by putting gas into them and that doesn't disappear in your mouth! Pop will make you bloat and swell and they're full of sugar which will just make you put weight on in the long run. Have a detoxing glass of water with a couple of slices of lemon or a hydrating carton of Coconut Water instead, yum. I like to keep a jug of water in the fridge with a sliced lemon & lime in, it stops me reaching for anything else when it's all ready to go on a night.

3) Go Natural - Processed foods and drinks are packed with little nasties that may make your favourite meals taste nice, but may also make finding those abs a little bit harder. Many of us have intolerance's/ sensitivities to certain food groups such as Gluten & Lactose without realising it and can develop these at any stage of our lives. Try to make more of your meals yourself, eat protein rich foods such as chicken and plenty of veg to help your abs make an appearance and stay around for a while. If I'm pushed for time I tend to just boil up some brown rice pasta, heat up some chopped tomatoes and grill off some chicken & asparagus, tasty, simple and very satisfying.

4) Get Hydrated - As with any fitness goal it is really important to stay hydrated, always carry a bottle of water with you, drink those 8 glasses a day and don't forget to look after yourself when your busy. Without taking water on board, your body will be unable to stay balanced and I always find I get a little water baby at the bottom of my tummy when I haven't drank enough.

5) Go Banana's - Minions have the right idea when it comes to eating their favourite fruit! Bananas are high in potassium which will will help reduce water retention naturally as well aiding your protein when it comes to building muscle. So go bananas whenever you can, if you want to take the Minion theme too far (and lets be honest who doesn't love Stuart, Bob & Kevin) you could eat one with Pharrell's 'Happy' playing full blast... Maybe?

As I said above, these are just a few things that work for me and if you want real serious advice please speak to a pro!
