Ab Fab


I can't remember a time when I didn't dream of having abs. Even back in the days when I had zero interest in fitness I would longingly admire the flat, toned stomachs of the bikini models. I never imagined back then I would be searching for them...



...But that is exactly what I have been doing, I've been searching for my abs. It's a long journey and one on which you cannot cheat or take shortcuts because a) if you do you won't find them and b) there are no short cuts.

When I first started to try and achieve something that resembled a toned stomach I would concentrate of just working my abdominals in the gym. Russian twists, crunches, bicycles, you name it I tried it but nothing ever happened. Why? Because working your abdominal muscles only plays a supporting role in the creation of those sexy little bumps we call abs!

Your diet needs to be on point - that means that you need to ditch the sugary treats and 'fat Fridays', you need to be eating plenty of veggies, chicken, fish, nuts, oats and bananas instead. You don't necessarily need to count calories or macros, just be sensible with your portion sizes, eat regularly and train hard.

I tend to find that my abs always look best first thing because after that they often get hidden behind a big old bloat that is often brought on by eating the wrong things at the wrong time and not drinking enough. Yes you heard me, the less I drink the more I bloat because not only can an increased water intake cause your body to retain a little more than it needs, so can a decreased.

So what do I do now?

At the moment I'm not specifically searching for my abs because I know that everything else I am doing will uncover them eventually. I work hard doing fasted cardio 3-4 times a week in the form of HIIT circuits or hill climbs on the bike before work. I eat well and I eat five times a day, three meals, two snacks and aim for a healthy balance of proteins, fats and carbs each meal. I lift, oh man do I lift, 5 nights a week combined with another 20-30 minutes of cardio and I sleep. Without sleep the body cannot repair and it is so important when pursuing your fitness dreams.

But most importantly I don't obsess. Obsessing leads to stressing which in my case leads to eating and then I fall off the wagon and it all goes wrong.
