The Dirty Side of Clean Eating

What do you think of when you hear the term 'Clean Eating', I used to think about whole foods, foods made from single ingredients. But then my mindset and approach to food was changed and not for the better...

Over the past few year I've cleaned up my act a lot.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to live forever, but I do want what to make the most of the time I have on this little orb we call Earth.

Turning 30 for me was a massive wakeup call, in my 20s I was rather sedentary - the byproduct of having a desk based job, no motivation to improve my wellbeing and feeling immortal. Because who thinks about the future when they're only 22 right?

Since I hit the big 3 0 I've exercised more than I ever have before, I've tried (and enjoyed) foods that I would never have dreamed of trying before and I've began to seek out new ways to help me make the most of life.

But seeking that out potentially did the opposite.

As successful as last year was for in terms of weight loss, when it came to trying to enjoy myself I started to feel guilty. Guilty for eating food that I loved, guilty that that food wasn't 'clean' and guilty that eating that food made my body bloat & pile on a few pounds in a short space of time.

The one thing that I have noticed with all of these 'clean' diets I have seen peddled through the media over the past 10 days is that not one of them promotes moderation. They all make you restrict yourself in some way, shape or form and yes we should always restrict ourselves a little (because let's face it a Starbucks Breakfast, McDonalds lunch and takeaway tea is not going to do our hearts any good) but we should never deprive ourselves of or feel guilty for enjoying something we that like.

Depriving yourself of different food groups can cause your body to panic when you reintroduce them (have you ever give Gluten Free a go and then wondered why your body cannot handle it if you start to eat it again?) because it has essentially forgotten how to handle them.

You may look good in Marbs if you've cut out the Carbs, but that lifestyle is not sustainable and the effects won't last if you try to return to 'normal' afterwards.

Fads are fads for a reason, they're short term solutions to longterm issues.

The dirty side of 'clean eating' is that there are are far too many people out there who are looking to make money from your insecurities, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

The truth is if you eat a balanced diet, filled with vitamins, minerals & fibre etc. then your body will be getting everything it needs to live a strong, healthy life and you will feel brilliant. Only cut out ingredients for health reasons, not because someone tells you that it will make your diet 'clean'.

Have you ever tried to 'eat clean'? Let me know your experiences below and I'll catch up with you again soon, until then though x
