Up & Running | #FitYear

On Sunday 11th May 2014 I completed my first ever Half Marathon. It was also my last Half Marathon too as I lost the love for running after that and started to do more weight based training instead over the next few years. But this year I've got the bug again...

Over the festive season I got the itch to do something incredible again this year, to become fitter, faster and stronger and what better way to challenge myself than to sign up for another crack at that Half Marathon?

So this May I'm taking on 13.1miles of Leeds again all in aid of Alzheimers Research UK, a cause that is very close to my heart and I am sure that it close to many of your hearts too. Dementia has touched and affected my life and my family in so many ways and has taken too many people from me over the years and for every pound raised I know that 84p will go towards powering vital research and help people fight dementia and that the remaining 16p will help raise the next pound and help with running costs.

But I don't just want to raise a pound or two, I want to raise at least £250. I've currently raised 10% of my target and you can follow my progress on my Virgin Money Giving page.

Over 850,000 people live with Dementia in the UK and that number is rapidly rising.

At £24 billion each year, dementia costs the UK economy more than cancer and heart disease combined but over two thirds of the care for Dementia patients is paid for by themselves or their family.

· £20 could fund one hour of vital research

· £50 could provide access to specialist equipment for studying cells

· £120 could support complex protein analysis

· £300 could pay for a genetic test to help identify risk genes

So why am I running this year?

I'm running because I can, because I want to be part of the cure and of something special and because there is no greater feeling than achieving something for yourself at the same time as helping others.

I cannot wait to see a see of colour ahead of me at the start line in Leeds, to maybe spot a few celebrities and fellow bloggers along the way, to see the sights of the city as I pound the pavements and of course to see the finish line and Millennium Square at the end of it all.

Today I am 88 days away from what will probably be my biggest challenge of the year and my goal is to finish in a quicker time than I did three years ago.

2 hours, 59 minutes, 54 seconds.

With that in mind it's time to get a little more mileage under the belt.

What challenges do you have coming up this year? Let me know below and I'll catch up with you again soon, until then though x
