Looking After Number One

I love the idea of self care - the idea of taking time out of our days to look after ourselves, to enrich our minds and nourish our bodies in whichever way we damn please. Making time in your diary to focus on yourself doesn't mean that you are being needy or selfish, far from it, it means that you want to protect the most important person in your life. You.

I've never understood why some people view taking time out as selfish - in our busy lives we are bound to need a little timeout every now and again. After all we're only human and trying to fit everything into our schedules to please the stakeholders in our lives only ends in disaster.

Burn out is real my friends; been there, suffered that and have the mental scars to prove it.

So what does self care mean to me?

To me it is all about looking after our beautiful minds, our gorgeous bodies and our wonderful souls - enriching and nourishing them and protecting them from harm. Quite often in society today we are surrounded by negative words and images that fill our minds with negative thoughts about ourselves; we're always aiming to be someone else, we're always chasing the impossible and we're always left wanting.

But you don't need to be someone else to be happy and you certainly don't need to go to the latest 'it' destination to feel accomplished in life. What you need to do is fill your life with your favourite things and don't be afraid to shut the door on life every once in a while if you need a little 'me' time.

Personally I'm never happier than when my days are filled with home cooked meals, than when I am able to spend a solid few hours working out, than when I am sat at my laptop creating content or whilst soaking up the sun with a good book in tow. I'm always at my best straight after I have had my nails done and my brows tamed, when I am taking things in my stride and not over complicating matters and when I am able to make plots and plans for the future.

It is easy to concentrate on 'real life' when thinking about self care - to make sure that we are fuelling our bodies with foods that are nourishing, that we are taking the time to make plans and memories with our loved ones and that we are doing things that make us happy just because we can - but we often forget about and neglect our 'online lives'.

I recently spoke an length on here about how 'It's OK' to remove people from your online lives if they make you doubt and/ or dislike who you are. For many of us our online lives are a constant source of inspiration and yet many of us end up feeling despondent and lost because we are too scared to remove people from our lives that make us feel inadequate, unattractive and unworthy.

We should never be made to feel like this because we are all enough, we are all gorgeous in our own ways and we are all totally worthy.

However, your 'online life' is YOUR life, it is YOUR connection to the outside world and YOUR constant source of inspiration. Surround yourself with people who make you feel inspired, who make you feel empowered and who make you feel like the total badass that you truly are.

Sometimes you will need to compromise, sometimes you will need to miss out and sometimes you will want to, but by thinking about yourself a little more you will be left feeling more in control of your life, happier with yourself and more content with what you have already.

We don't always need more to be happier, we just need to be us.
