I love that feeling of stepping off of a plane in a new country. You know the one, that mixed feeling of trepidation and excitement about what lies ahead of you. But do you know what I love more? Those first sips of something sparkling on the balcony…
Paul & I have been signed up to Secret Escapes for a while now, spending many a night looking at the latest getaways and deals they have on offer. For the past few years we haven’t had to put much effort into deciding on a holiday location having headed away with friends but this year we were flying solo (well just the two of us but you know what I mean, flying duo just doesn’t have the same ring to it).
You could say that when we spotted the offer of ‘5* Gran Canaria Holiday’ on the Secret Escapes website it was a case of right place, right time and we booked it almost instantly.
Having read a few posts about the Island earlier in the year I was instantly excited and couldn’t wait to get there. Little did I know that upon arrival I would never want to leave.
We flew from Manchester Airport with Monarch and upon arrival in Gran Canaria we were met by our driver who drove us the short distance to Salobre (a small golf resort located on the South of the Island). As we travelled down to the hotel we were treated to what was the first of many magnificent sunsets and as we pulled off of the motorway onto the private road into Salobre, a panoramic view of Maspalomas itself.
Paul & I had the same thought as we pulled into the hotel itself, it was like being on the set of a Bond film (more specifically Quantum of Solace) thanks to its isolated location and terracotta facade. Inside we were greeted with a glass of Cava in the hotels impressive lobby before checking into our suite for the week.
Onsite the Sheraton has everything you need to while away a week in paradise. The Aloe Spa offers guests the opportunity to laze days away whilst gazing out over the southern Valleys of Gran Canaria and the resort’s golf course and also plays host to a daily dose of well being in the form of Yoga, Pilates or Sun Salutation. Well being and fitness activities are complimentary for guests and the spa is accessible at just €20 per day (we paid €50 each for usage for the whole week and visited every day).
The hotel boasts an impressive 7 pools in total, including the infinity pool on the 11th floor which allows bathers to look out into the Atlantic and the Maspalomas sand dunes on the coastline below. Paul and I would often start our days down in the Spa and switch to one of the other pool areas after lunch and we never once had any issues with finding a sun lounger on which to laze. In fact we even managed to bag one of the Riverbeds late one afternoon!
Talking of which we hired one of the cliff top Balinese beds midweek and spent a full day there being waited on, enjoying the view and soaking up the sun. These are an absolute must if you visit the hotel and at just €35 for the day (including a bottle of Cava) they are a total bargain too.
FInally the food, always leave the best till last hey? Whilst there was absolutely no downsides to the hotel at all (and I must stress that the service, views and location make this the ideal indulgent escape anyway), the fact that we never had a bad meal, never struggled to find something we were happy to eat or never had to wait for a table made the whole trip feel like an escape from reality.
There was freshly cooked meat and fish to order on a night, fresh fruit and eggs a plenty in a morning and more Cava than I could cope with! Most nights we ate in the Goffio buffet (which left the heart with little to desire thanks to its wide array of world cuisines), but we also sampled the delights of the Perenquen Tapas bar too which was an amazing experience too. During the day you can fill up on Paella and Spanish Omelettes in La Palmera or Sunset and let us not forget the amazing cocktails in Bar 230 (aptly named after how far the bar is above sea level).
I’m suddenly aware that I have rambled on about the delights of this hotel for quite a while now, but hopefully that gives you a good idea of just how much we fell in love with this little jewel in Gran Canaria’s crown.
Where did you fall in love with this Summer? Let me know below and I’ll catch up with you again soon, until then though x
