Sticking to a health & fitness regime in December can be hard work thanks to our diaries busting at the seems with social dates and it can be easy to fall into a bit of a fitness funk when you haven’t been able to train for a while.
Personally I fall into funks all too easily and in the past I have really struggled to pull myself out of them. I usually fall into them because I’ve lost focus, because I lack time or simply (and most commonly of all) I lack motivation.
So what can you do when you find yourself stuck a big old funk?
Well personally nothing gives me a kick to get back to it than new kit, so go shopping! Make sure that when you purchase your shiny new kit you shop for the size and shape you currently are and not the size and shape you aim to be in the future. Buy kit that supports you, that you feel comfortable and confident in and most importantly buy kit that is made for the type of training you do, ain’t no Yoga Bra going to withstand 5k on the treadmill!
One way to focus and motivate yourself is to set goals for yourself. This could be anything from losing a few pounds to running a marathon, whatever motivates you. But be realistic – don’t aim to lose too much too soon because there’s nothing more likely to put you back in the funk than falling at the first hurdle!
Exercise isn’t supposed to be boring and dull so make it fun and interesting. How do you make it fun and interesting? Try a new class, workout with a friend or take your workout outdoors and get some fresh air at the same time. Evidence suggests working out with likeminded individuals makes us more likely to succeed, so what do we have to lose?
Finally, plan ahead. Grab a copy of your gyms timetable and highlight all of the classes that you can make and note them in your diary, set reminders on your phone for an hour before and make a commitment to a friend to join them at least once a week for a workout. Maybe organise to grab a coffee afterwards too?
It might sound simple, but getting out of a funk is no mean feat. So if you’re stuck in a funk, get out there go shopping, have fun and think forward. Not back.
