When it comes to nutrition I am something of a novice, just like many of you out there reading this probably. I love to read different views on the subject and to compare different streams of information but man alive its a confusing subject matter.
But here is what I do understand.
Nutrition is not a diet, it is not a quick fix or a short term commitment. Nutrition is a way of life, something that should be part of your lifestyle and a something that if done right can make your body become the temple that you want it to be.
Over the years I have experimented with food to see what does and doesn’t work for me, I’ve felt uncomfortable in my own body and abused it with foods that have no value to them at all. I’ve felt unhappy, sorry for myself & sulked because things just weren’t right.
I’ve been that person who has blamed their problems, their circumstances (I’m too busy to go to the gym, I’m to busy to cook) and I’ve known for a long time that something needed to change. And change they have.
I’ve started to listen to people that know what they are talking about (#balance), stopped listening to the Wowcher gurus & binned the so-called diet books once and for all. I don’t care about my BMI, red or green days or whatever the latest fricking fad is.
I’ve started to talk to said people who know what they are talking about, I’ve started to eat whole foods that help fuel my body through meetings, workouts and long-journeys. I’ve stopped snacking on the sweet treats, ditched the crisps and started to make sensible choices instead.
Over time I’ve started to gain an understanding of how to control my nutrition in a way that works best for me, not my nutrition controlling me.
So spending time away no long scares me.
It no longer scares me because I know that no matter where I go there will be something that I can eat, something I can ask for. I also know that although nutrition plays a big part in how I feel and how I look, I also need to stay active in order to avoid slipping back into old habits.
I’m not sitting and waiting for someone to wave a magic wand, to invent an extra hour in the day or to tell me what to do. I’m not being lazy and letting the world do all the work for me, I’m getting out there and finding out things for myself and its working.
So this Summer don’t feel afraid of the buffet cart, fill up on bright, colourful fresh foods instead. Stay in control on your travels and feel content.
