24 Hours in the City – Leeds

I have a few nights away in the pipeline for this year and I thought I would start up a little travel series to encompass my experiences. In the inaugural ’24 Hours in the City’ I go back to my roots and spend the night in Leeds…

… Leeds is a city that has, and always will have, a special place in my heart. It’s where I was born, where I grew up, where I went on my first night out, where I studied and of course where I met Paul. Generally we don’t do much for Valentine’s Day, not since we moved in together anyway, maybe a nice meal and a movie at home.

However, this year we decided to book a hotel in Leeds and head out for a little food and a few drinks.

We stayed at The New Ellington, a boutique hotel a stone’s throw away from the train station in the gorgeous Legal District. I’ve always admired the buildings in this area, they’re grand Art Deco style builds that exude elegance. At first sight The New Ellington is unassuming, fitting in perfectly with the now commercial landscape that has taken over, but once inside you feel as though you have taken a step back in time.

Our room was on the third floor and had a wonderful and peaceful balcony area that we would definitely have utilised had the weather been not quite so Arctic as it was. Inside we had a spacious room that was decorated in my favourite neutral coffee shades, an eclectic mix of art deco and modern interior design and enough space to not trip over my overly large Primark bag (that haul will be with you soon don’t worry).

Feeling relaxed from my Shiatsu massage at the wonderful Neal’s Yard, I decided to quickly transform myself into night time mode and head down to The Gin Garden with Paul.

Located within The New Ellington, The Gin Garden specialises in my favourite tipple, Gin. After chatting through our favourite flavours with their knowledgeable team of bartenders, we found ourselves a table in the atrium and enjoyed our bespoke cocktails.

That night we ate at the amazing (yes I know I always say this but it truly is) Red’s True BBQ. Red’s specialise in transforming good quality (and where possible UK produced) ingredients using the age old methods of low and slow BBQ, into tasty morsels of joy. In addition to my Jamaican Mojito (one of my favourite Red’s beverages) I enjoyed the BBQ Lollipops and their Brisket plate before heading along to Angelica’s in the Trinity development for a few more G&Ts.

Angelica’s is a very popular spot in Leeds and this being Valentine’s weekend it was unsurprisingly packed with couples looking to enjoy the laid back atmosphere and panoramic views of the City skyline.

Sunday was all about shopping, heading back to Leeds’ Trinity Centre to make a few purchases (there was birthday money burning a hole in my pocket still) and enjoy a coffee (or a Grande Peppermint Tea in my case). I’ll share my purchases with you in a forthcoming haul post soon, but let’s just say there was Next & Pink involved!

I think my highlight of my time in Leeds was our Valentine’s Lunch at the magnificent Fazenda, a gaucho style restaurant in the revamped Granary Wharf. Although we arrived slightly early we were shown straight to our table and greeted with a glass of Prosecco each and cute red carnation to celebrate the day. We then filled our faces with as many servings of steak as we could manage as well as sides and a dessert before rolling ourselves back to the car.

Leeds has everything in my eyes, it has glitz & glamour, but it also has laidback and casual alongside this meaning you can always find somewhere to enjoy a quiet drink or grab a bite to eat. Yes the City Centre is spread out over a relatively vast area and it doesn’t have an underground or metro, but you miss things when you use public transport in City Centres. I like to walk around and take in the sights.

Leeds is a wonderful City, they say home is where the heart is and Leeds will always be my home.

What did you do to celebrate this Valentines? Have you spent time in Leeds or another City?

Let me know below and I’ll catch up with you again soon, until then though x
