Finding yourself a decent personal trainer can be a stressful and bewildering experience if you have never done it before. and of course unfortunately there are some trainers out there that are only after you for your money. But then there are good honest trainers who actually care about you as a person and those are the ones that you want to look out for.
When you’re looking to get your hair re-styled, you take time over finding a good stylist to take control of the transformation for you. The same applies when you’re looking to make over your body and it is worth taking a bit of time over too.
First of all, before even approaching anyone to train you, ask yourself one question; what am I looking to achieve? What is my goal? The answer to this question will probably rule out a handful of trainers for you fairly quickly as many will be jacks of all trades but specialists in a particular area. Personally my main reason for training is to keep myself motivated. Some days I would just go into the gym, bumble about for a bit, do very little and leave feeling worse than when I got in. So PT for me is mostly about keeping me motivated and giving me knew ideas, exercises and techniques to try out in my own time.
Next start talking to people, put the idea out there to your friends and family on social media, chat to people in the gym or at work, you will find that a few of them will be or will have used a PT themselves, or have been recommended one in the past. Word of mouth recommendations are worth their weight in gold because they are natural and organic referrals.
Many PT’s within gyms will offer ‘try before you buy’ sessions to members, take them up on the offer and try as many of the trainers as you can. As well as being able to help you achieve your fitness goals, they also need to be able to work with you, not against you and be able to tailor your plan to you alone. Again unfortunately there are a few out there that will take a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Avoid them and opt for someone who looks to find out about you as a person, that wants to know more about what you do and want.
Once you have tried a few different trainers out take a bit of time to reflect on what you have done with each of them, what each of them could do for you and ultimately who you felt most at ease with. I have nothing against male PTs at all, however, I feel more comfortable with a female trainer as I think they just understand me a little better, why I struggle with certain exercises and what will help me improve a little more.
When it comes to signing up with a trainer, the better ones will offer you the option of block booking your sessions or simply doing a ‘pay as you go’ type agreement and they will assess your current fitness levels by taking some measurements, noting what you max speed or weight is and then review this every 6-8 weeks to show you how far you have come, how much you have improved and spur you on to work harder.
So as long as you take the time to reflect on what you want, research what’s on offer, have a trial session and pick someone you feel confident in and comfortable with you should be able to find the right PT for you.
