Holiday Packing 101

With the passing of every Summer Holiday and City Break that I am lucky enough to experience I feel a little bit more like a boss with regards to packing. I am no expert don’t get me wrong, but I do feel like I know what I’m doing for once!

When I first headed off on holiday with Paul back in 2007, I spent weeks (and I mean weeks) preparing my wardrobe and making sure that I had more that enough outfits to mean that I didn’t need to wear the same thing twice. These days I’m a little more conservative with my luggage allowance and I think I cobble together a suitcase pretty darn well in an evening.

This year I’m that prepared that I’ve even pre-order my duty free to collect from the airport. I mean who even am I?

So given my new packing super power, I thought that I would share one or two (or maybe even four) of my favourite tips with you that you can use to boss your packing with this Summer!

PLAN AHEAD … Now I know I probably say this every time I do a tips style post like this, but lets be honest planning is pretty important. Now when I say plan ahead I don’t mean you need to sit down with a pen and paper, plot out your outfits for morning, noon and night whilst you’e away and pack everything but the kitchen sink. But pick out a few options from your wardrobe, identify gaps in your wardrobe and go shopping early rather than being last minute dot com.

START EARLY … Being honest I don’t actually start packing until a few days before because packing weeks ahead just seems a little over kill to me. But what I do start doing is putting clothes aside a week or so before so that I don’t have to worry about madly washing half my wardrobe the weekend before. Packing ahead helps you to identify any toiletries that you might need, anything you might need to replace or simply confirm that you are a packing king or queen!

GO MINIMAL … If you’re not sure you will wear it, leave it. Simples. You might have a 26kg luggage allowance but that doesn’t mean you need to use it all. So think it through and if in doubt, leave it out.

ROLL UP … I’m sure you’ve heard this one a million times before, in every packing tips post out there, but rolling up your clothing is a) the best way to keep everything crease-free and b) the most effective way to maximise your case space. Plus if like me you’re worried about your delicates making an appearance on the the luggage belt at your destination you can simply roll them inside your t-shirts!

But if all else fails, if you leave it to the night before and you’re running around in a blind panic SWOT UP on packing lists, there’s loads online and they can really help you to make sure you have the basics down. Lets face it, as long as you have your travel documents, your passport and some money, then there probably isn’t anything that you can’t pick up either at the airport or your destination.

Do you have any fails safe packing tips?

Let me know below and I’ll catch up with you again soon, until then though x
