Love Yourself

On a regular basis I see the world of the media (both social & mainstream) telling us how we need to be more active, that we need to eat certain foods and consume certain drinks in order to maintain our physical well being…

…And don’t get me wrong, social media is a wonderful way to stay connected, to network and to learn. But sometimes it can create a pressure cooker effect on our lives as we strive to be the ideals we are told we should be.

We spend so much time consumed in our pursuit of greatness that we forget about our pursuit of happiness. Look around on your commute home, how many happy faces do you see around you? How many people look satisfied and content with their lot? It is human nature to strive to be more, to better ourselves, however, we appear to be more and more willing to let this take over our lives.

Just before Easter I hosted the Sunday evening #FitBunniesChat and a few things were evident from the answers I got that night; we could all be kinder to ourselves, what others say has a big effect on our emotional state and we find it easier to help others than to help ourselves.

I recently made a suggestion on here that for every negative comment we see, we should spread a little bit of cheer and positivity in response. But it is so important that we remember to take care of ourselves too.

FIND PEACE | Find yourself a quiet place, be it at home, at the local library or even your favourite beauty spot and allow yourself a few minutes to sit back, relax and think about yourself.

HAVE RESPECT | Think about all of the things that you love and respect about yourself, note them down in your diary (or in your phone) and keep them close by for times when you’re feeling a little down. Don’t compare yourself to others or try to be something that you are not, improve because you want to and strive to be the best version of your true self that you can be.

BALANCING ACT | Create a little more balance in your life. Think about all of the things that you do and all of the things that you would like to do. Plan out your week to include at least one thing that you want to do and not just the things that you need to do.

RUN RIGHT | I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again but you wouldn’t expect your diesel supermini to run on unleaded fuel would you? So don’t expect your brain and emotions to function on a lack of sleep and on the wrong fuel. Make time to relax, eat a balanced diet and see your mood lift within a few days.

FRESHEN UP | Although lounging around in a hot tub, infused with the latest Lush bathbomb and listening to your favourite music is a great way to relax, I find the best way to freshen up is to get outdoors. Aim to make more time to get some fresh air in your lungs, to get away from the madding crowds and off of the grid. Just a few minutes a day away from the world will lift your mood and energy levels.

There are so many ways that you can lift your own spirits, self-esteem and improve your emotional well being and these are just a few of the ways that I have found help when I feel a little low and I hope they can help you all too.

I’d love to learn a few things that you guys love and respect about yourselves, leave me a comment below to let me know and let’s start complimenting yourselves a little more!
