When it comes to Christmas I often get referred to as a bit of scrooge because I’m not all about the hype and don’t tend to start getting excited until December arrives. But in all honesty, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
You see I actually love Christmas. I love waking up on December 1st, knowing that the month ahead holds so much love and laughter in store and that all of the years hard work will be rewarded with a few much needed days off with those that I love and cherish the most.
I love that the first weekend of the month is spent at home, preparing for the month ahead, tidying space for the tree and trimming up. When it comes to decorations I totally believe that less is more with a wreath hanging on the front door, a garland on the stairs and the tree taking pride of place in the bay window.
I find it so comforting to site down on a night, with the tree twinkling away and candlelight flickering in the corner of the room, to watch a Christmas movie with a hot chocolate or maybe even a glass of Port.
Snuggling up with my festive cushion on the sofa in my favourite Christmas socks and watching the snow fall outside, feeling all warm and toasty is such a relaxing feeling too. Here’s hoping we get some snow soon!
I love driving home from work, from the gym or from the shops with good old Michael Buble serenading me along the way, his dulcet tones make even the harshest traffic jam bearable.
But I think what I love the most about Christmas is the tradition of all and what people mistake for me being a scrooge is my dislike of all the pomp and ceremony that has been created around the occasion. I don’t like that shops shove Christmas in our faces from the start of November, that people spend all year planning their perfect Christmas and look down their noses at those that don’t, I prefer spontaneity.
But now that December is here, I’m definitely in full cheer and now that the house is all decked out I’m more than ready for the month ahead.
Time to light the candle and pop on Love Actually.
