Harmony Blaze | Sunglasses, the ultimate travel must have ... a note on UV rays and why we need to protect against them

We all know sunglasses as a staple accessory in the summertime, a good pair of sunglasses can really complete a look! But they also provide us with essential protection against the suns harmful UV rays all year round, making them a staple travel accessory…

We all need UV protection – UV rays from the sun can cause damage to our eyes and the sensitive skin around them.

I’ve been 100% guilty of squinting my way through Summer in the past, especially when those purple hued glasses clash with my outfit, but with UV exposure being linked to the onset cataracts and macular degeneration, I really shouldn’t and it is essential we wear sunglasses to keep our vision and eyes protected.

Sunglasses are the ultimate travel must-have, whether you’re travelling when the sun is shining or not, after all up to a massive 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate cloud, so even on overcast days, you should be wearing UV protection.

I even wear mine when it’s raining if it’s still bright … yes I’m that person!

So what should you be looking out for when shopping for sunglasses?

When looking for a pair of sunglasses, the first thing you should always check for is the “CE” marking and whether or not they have UV400 lenses, as both of these guarantee a safe level of UV protection. If a pair of sunglasses are not CE or UV400 marked, though they may shade your eyes (look pretty) and help you to see on a bright day, there is no guarantee they will be protecting your eyes from those harmful UV rays.

Yes, everyone has a favourite style of sunglasses; whether it’s aviators (hello Maverick), oversized or dainty frames, brightly coloured or something more minimal, there’s a frame to suit every personality.

But when it comes to one of your most important senses, can you really afford to choose fashion over function? Or do you even need to?

At Leightons all of their sunglasses are CE marked meaning you can choose any pair and know you are protected.

Leightons Opticians and Hearing Care offer a huge range of sunglasses to choose from, some favourite brands include Maui Jim, Silhouette and of course Ray-Ban. Their dispensing opticians are on hand to guide you in making the perfect choice for your face, style and budget. Leaving you looking and feeling great while staying protected against UV.
