Taking Time Out

It can be all too easy when you’re chasing your latest fitness dream to forget that about the things that your body needs in order to progress, especially relaxation.

I know this is something that I have been guilty of in the past. In days gone by (I can’t say years because if I’m honest it’s something that has only sunk in recently) I would have happily pushed myself for weeks on end in search of those perfect pins & fab abs. 

At the minute I’m working out 5/6 days a week, doing a mixture of cardio & hypertrophy based training sessions as I look to shed some fat and lean up before I jet off on holiday in September (81 days if you’re interested) and it is important that I get at least one rest day in a week to allow my muscle to repair and recover and eventually become stronger.

One of the best ways to relax is to take some total time out away from all the stresses and strains of daily life, to drive away from the heart of the city to somewhere a little more serene and green, where the only noise is the sound of your own breath and where you can spend a little time gathering your thoughts. 

Last Saturday I got to do just that as I made the short journey over the hills (and too far away) to Cheshire and the delightful Mottram Hall Golf & Leisure Resort.

As soon as you turn into the winding driveway you instantly feel that little bit more isolated, disconnected and at ease as you make your way through the grounds towards the mansion house itself. 

Tucked away at the rear of the house is the Mottram Hall Club & Spa, an oasis of calm and tranquility surrounded by over 270 acres of parkland and once in your waffle robe and slippers you can truly get off of the radar and relax.

I started off my spa session in their unique ‘Alfresco Thermospa’ losing track of time in the Mineral Stonebath, concentrating on my breathing and thinking about little else than how gorgeous the surroundings were. Each of the alfresco experiences feature floor to ceiling windows to enhance the rustic & rural feeling. 

After enjoying a little R&R on the terrace, lazing in a swinging chair I took a dip in the indoor pool – a heated delight and comforting calm on my aching muscles. Resting doesn’t need to mean staying still, a few lengths will help invigorate your senses and soothe away aches and pains without adding to the strain of weight training.

However above all else my favourite way to unwind in a spa is so sit in the hydrobath, disconnect myself from the world and enjoy. Our bodies don’t perform well under stress, in fact they do the exact opposite of well making it harder to progress, so a little time in a hot tub with a few bubbles is just what the doc ordered!
