So back in January I introduced you to ‘The Detox Files’ & I had planned for it to be a 3 part series for January, however, I thought it might be quite nice to keep revisiting the topic throughout the year instead and keep us all focused on looking after our health and wellbeing this year…
… When it comes to detoxing, we all think about our bodies and reach for the nearest juice diet, low carb plan or head to the spa to cleanse our skin and rarely take a minute think about our mental health.
One thing that I have learned over the last year or so is that taking just a few minutes a day really does help to lower your stress levels, reduce anxiety and help you get a better night’s sleep. Today I want to share just a few of the ways I use to unwind at the end of each day.
Meditation | Headspace is a free app from the AppStore and it is basically like having a PT for your mind – you get a free guided meditation trial with the download and then there’s a monthly or annual subscription that you can sign up to afterwards that opens up a whole world of relaxation options for you.
Reading | I really find that reading helps to distract my mind on an evening, but I must stress that when I say you should read I mean the old-fashioned, non-electronic kind of reading! So pick up your latest copy of Cosmo, make yourself a nice relaxing hot drink and ignore the world for half an hour.
Colour | Adult colouring books are a craze that has swept that nation and one that I am happy to embrace. Sitting down and focusing on something such as colouring helps your mind to drift away from the stresses of the day and ultimately switch off that little bit easier when it comes to settling down to sleep.
I must admit, I do need to take my advice sometimes as I’d quite happily stay up into the early hours typing away and chatting to fellow bloggers on Twitter. Maybe I should vow to start a clean slate when it comes to relaxation?
This is by no means an extensive list of options, I also have a Yantra Mat (check that out here) that I love to use when I am particularly stressed, I light candles, I listen to podcasts and then there’s exercise too which I would probably rate as my number one way to unwind after a day in the office!
Take a little time this week to find out what relaxes you, try a few different things out and make it your goal to spend just 5 minutes a day away from the world and enjoy your own company.
